Updating ILLiad to Version 9.1

Print Friendly and PDF Follow

If you are hosted by OCLC or Atlas, you will need to schedule a server update before you can use the new client. There may be a brief period of downtime while the server update runs. This needs to be coordinated internally with your other staff. The downtime is usually brief enough that you do not need to communicate it to end users ahead of time.

Self-hosted sites should update their servers using the ILLiad Server Automatic Updater (AutoUpdater). You will first update the AutoUpdater to the latest version, then you will update the server to the latest version of ILLiad. See ILLiad Server Automatic Updater for more information on the AutoUpdater.

Updating the AutoUpdater

The first step is to update the AutoUpdater.

  1. Run the ILLiadUpdate file as an administrator (by right-clicking on the file and selecting the Run as administrator option). The update file is found at C:\illiad\Admin\ILLiadUpdate.
  2. You will be prompted to log into your database using your Username and Password. Once you click OK you will be directed to the AutoUpdater.
  3. If you are on the latest version of ILLiad, the only available update you will see (in the Available Updates box) will be for the AutoUpdater.
  4. Click Start ILLiad Server Update
  5. Because you are only updating the AutoUpdater, you do not need to perform a database backup or reboot at this time.
  6. When you close the AutoUpdater the file will automatically replace itself with the newer version.

Updating the Server

You can now update your server with the latest ILLiad files.

Check server and workstation requirements for the new version by reviewing the ILLiad 9.1 Release Notes and Hardware and Software Requirements.

ILLiad 9.1 requires the Microsoft .NET 4.6.2 framework or higher. You will not be able to run the updater unless this version is installed.

  1. Reopen the Updater by clicking the ILLiad Update icon again. You are again prompted to log into your database.
  2. This time when the AutoUpdater opens, the Available Updates list includes all of the files for the newest update.
  3. Click Start ILLiad Server Update.
  4. You will need to perform a backup of your database before you update these files. When prompted to confirm database backup, click Yes.
  5. The update will begin by stopping the web server to replace the web circ and web reports files.
  6. Next, all of the available updates will download, any necessary SQL scripts will run, and any shared components are installed.
  7. When you are prompted to reboot your server, click OK.
  8. Once the update has finished you can close the AutoUpdater.

Updating the Client

After updating the server, the client will prompt you to update it to the latest version as well. If you have not previously installed the client you will need to download and install it.

ILLiad 9.1 requires the Microsoft .NET 4.6.2 framework or higher be installed on your local workstation. You will not be able to run the updater unless this version is installed.

If you do not already have the ILLiad client installed on your server, you can download the Installer from the ILLiad Downloads pages. Note that the default location for the client installation is C:\Program Files (x86)\ILLiad\.

  1. Click to open the ILLiad client.
  2. A dialog box will appear and ask if you want to update the client.
  3. To update the client, click Yes.

The Client Updater updates or installs the ILLiad Client, ILLiad Customization Manager, and ILLiad Staff Manager. Note that the default location for the client installation is C:\Program Files (x86)\ILLiad\. When new versions of the ILLiad client become available, the ILLiad client will automatically prompt you to update and download the latest files necessary. Note that administrative privileges are needed for major updates (8.7, 9.0, 9.1) but are not needed for minor updates, such as 8.7.x or 9.0.x.

Installing the Client on Workstations

The ILLiad client can be updated on workstations the same way it is updated on the server- the client will prompt users to update once the server has been updated. If you have a new workstation that needs the latest client version installed on it, you would need to run the ILLiad Client Installer available on the ILLiad Downloads page. This will install the latest ILLiad Client, Customization Manager, and Staff Manager.

The client defaults install to C:\Program Files (x86)\illiad\ on your local workstation. The ILLiad client, Staff Manager and Customization Manager all have to run locally and cannot run from a shared drive. Note that while a fresh set of files is installed to the 9.* directory, your c:\illiad and c:\illiad9 folders are untouched. You should clean those out once you are sure you have your Word templates and email templates safely moved to a new location.

Rebooting the Server

Once the server and client update has finished, reboot your server to ensure the latest updated components are started and running.

ISO Upgrade

The ISO Service requires a manual upgrade after the 9.1 update due to the new database configuration. For instructions on upgrading, see 9.1 ISO Service Upgrade.
