Purpose/Scope
This article addresses questions about automatically updating copyright years in ILLiad web page files, specifically when you've modified files like include_footer.html. Use this article when you want to understand copyright year management.
Resolution
Current Recommendation
ILLiad does not provide a recommended line of code for automatically updating copyright years in web page files. Here's what you need to know:
When to Update Copyright Years
- If you edit web pages: You should manually update the copyright year when you make changes to ILLiad web pages
- If you haven't modified web pages: You can leave the copyright year as-is (static)
Why Automatic Updates Aren't Recommended
The ILLiad development team has noted that in some cases, the ILLiad DLL may dynamically overwrite the year that displays on web pages. This means:
- Automatic copyright year updates could potentially conflict with ILLiad's internal processes
- Manual updates provide more control and predictability
- Static years are acceptable for unmodified pages
Best Practices
- For modified pages: Update the copyright year manually when you make changes
- For unmodified pages: Leave the existing year in place
