ILLiad Single or Shared Server

Print Friendly and PDF Follow

For new installations of ILLiad, there is the option to install as a single server or shared server. Before implementing ILLiad, libraries will work with their ILLiad sales representative to decide if a single server or shared server installation will best meet their needs.

Shared server installations are also known as satellite sites.

  • A single server installation is recommended when a library has only one location they will process ILLiad requests.
  • A shared server installation is recommended when a library has more than one location they will process ILLiad requests.

ILLiad Single Server

A single server installation is the most basic ILLiad setup. This setup is recommended when a library has only one location they will process ILLiad requests.

An ILLiad single server installation will have:

  • One single Processing Locations/Sites
  • One or more Delivery/Pickup Locations
  • One OCLC symbol

ILLiad Shared Server

A shared server installation is a more complex ILLiad setup. This setup is recommended when a library has more than one location they will process ILLiad requests.

An ILLiad shared server installation will have:

  • More than one Processing Location/Site
  • One or more Delivery/Pickup Locations for each Processing Location
  • One or more OCLC symbols

Sites/Processing Locations

A Processing Location is a physical place where ILLiad processing is occurring. This is also referred to as a Site.

Staff logged into a Processing Location in ILLiad are able to view users and requests assigned to that specific processing location. They are also able to print slips and labels and send emails to patrons with templates that can be customized with information specific to that Processing Location.

Delivery/Pickup Locations

A Delivery Location (also referred to as a Pickup Location) is the physical place where patrons will pick up Interlibrary Loan materials. This may be the same as the Processing Location, or it may be a different location.

A Processing Location can have more than one Delivery Location associated with it.

Determining Your Setup

Before installing ILLiad, you will work with OCLC and Atlas to determine if you will have a single server or shared server installation. To determine which setup will be best for your institution, ask the following questions:

  1. How many OCLC Symbols will your system be using?
  2. How many Docline Symbols will your system be using?
  3. How many RAPID Symbols will your system be using?

If the answer to any of these questions is more than 1 symbol, you must have a shared server installation.
If the answer to these questions is 1 or 0 symbols, you will have a single server installation.

Even if you have only 1 symbol, you may choose to have a shared server installation if:
    • You have multiple services or departments that will have separate billing processes.
    • You have multiple services or departments that have different rules or processing policies than others.
You can discuss these options with your OCLC and Atlas service representatives.

  4. How many different physical locations will you be doing ILL processing?

If you will have only 1 processing location, you will have a single server installation.
If you will have more than 1 processing location, you must have a shared server installation.

  5. How many different physical locations will you allow pickup of requested items by patrons?

If you will have only one location for patrons to pick up materials, you will not add pickup/delivery locations to your system.
If you will have more than one locations for patrons to pick up materials, you will need to add pickup/delivery locations.

Once you have determined if you will have a single server or a shared server installation, you will need to determine if you will have more than one pickup/delivery locations. If you will have a single server installation, these pickup/delivery locations can be added to your system at any time. If you will have a shared server installation, the setup is more complicated and will need to be determined before installing ILLiad.

Even if you have multiple OCLC symbols associated with one location at your institution, you cannot assign multiple OCLC symbols to a single Site/Processing Location in ILLiad. The ILLiad system cannot handle downloading and updating in that fashion. Multiple OCLC symbols will require a shared server installation.
