Issue

After configuring an LTI 1.3 connection between Ares and a course/learning management system (CMS) such as Blackboard or Brightspace, users may find that some deep links to Ares item content do not load within the CMS interface when clicked from the course page.

This issue occurs when the CMS is configured to use an HTTPS connection, but the Ares item links to external content using an HTTP connection. Due to web browser security constraints, HTTP content will not load within iFrames contained within an HTTPS interface.

Solution

This issue is caused by web browser security standards and is not an issue caused by Ares. However, there are several optional solutions you can implement to workaround this issue:

  • Option 1: Require instructors supplying their own links to course item content to only supply resources that use an HTTPS connection
  • Option 2: Configure the LTI 1.3 tool/application created within your CMS for the Ares connection to open all content in an external tab/window. Please refer to your specific CMS' documentation for detailed steps on implementing this setting. An example of this setting within the Brightspace LTI 1.3 tool deployment configuration interface is shown below:

  • Option 3: Configure individual Ares item deep links within the course that link to HTTP content to open in an external tab/window on a case-by-case basis. Please refer to your specific CMS' documentation for detailed steps on implementing this setting. An example of this setting for an item deep link configured on a Brightspace course page is shown below:
