Upcoming Ares release on 11/18/24

Hello Ares Community,

An Ares server update (version 5.0.18) will be released on Monday, November 18, 2024, for those using LTI in an iframe and have separate domain names for their Ares instance and their LMS. There is no client update required. The release will include the following changes:

• Implement a CHIPS (Cookies Having Independent Partitioned State) solution for Ares to address issues with web browsers that no longer support cookies shared within the same parent domain for sites that have a different domain name for Ares from their LMS. Users affected by this may encounter blocked cookies, causing them to be redirected to the login screen. Additional details can be found in the release notes here.

Important Post Update Note

• CHIPS is supported in most major browsers, except Safari. You can check browser compatibility here. If you're experiencing issues, we recommend using a browser other than Safari until it supports CHIPS, or alternatively, configure the LMS tool to open in new windows instead of using embeds.
• To mitigate this issue we recommend using the same domain name for Ares and your LMS.

Updating Procedures

• Atlas Systems Hosted: Server updates will not be applied automatically, as these changes are only needed in rare cases. If you're using an older version of Ares and would like to schedule an update, please contact support@atlas-sys.com to arrange an update with our hosting services.
• Self-hosted: Please review the updating instructions and coordinate with your IT department to schedule the update.
