RFID Tags

We want to confirm whether RFID tags will integrate and work properly with the software programs we use such as Aeon and Aspace; are there specific RFID tags that Atlas would recommend?

  • Hi Zak, Thank you for your question! We haven't gotten a question about RFID tags before, that I'm aware of, so I'm going to create a ticket and send it to the Aeon product team. For ArchivesSpace, I'll ask at our next meeting if they have any suggestions. We'll be in touch!

  • Hi Zak,

Can you tell us a bit more about how you want to use RFID tags? Would you place them in boxes to use for tracking in place of a barcode? If so, is there specific hardware you're planning to use?

    Thanks,
    Katie

  • Hi Katie,

No we weren't planning on placing them in boxes. We are really just weighing regular barcodes against RFIDS, pros and cons. It seems like the main benefit to RFIDs would be the ability easily locate misfiled/misplaced boxes. I don't know what specific hardware we would be using. I think we are moving in the direction of regular barcodes, but I just wanted to reach out in case anybody had used RFIDs with ASpace and had any thoughts.

    Thanks,

    Zak

  • Hi Zak,

Great, thanks for the additional information. We haven't had anyone use RFID tags with Aeon, but we think they would work similarly to barcodes. If you had a scanner to scan the code into Aeon, you could use that in the ItemNumber field which would allow for searching.

Anne Marie is going to check on what's possible in ASpace.

    Thanks,
    Katie

  • Hello Zak,

I spoke with ArchivesSpace this morning, and they didn't know of anyone who is using RFID tags with ArchivesSpace, but that does not mean that there aren't people out there. They mentioned that there is a barcode field in the top container record that could accommodate alphanumeric characters. They warned that although ArchivesSpace would be good at storing the RFID information, it does not have the functionality that other library systems might have that are designed to interact with RFID tags.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thank you,

    Anne Marie

  • Thanks Anne Marie. This is very helpful.  I think we are leaning towards barcodes, rather than RFID tags.
