Mark Found/Scan Now for Borrowing
Hello Everyone, What are the various workarounds you use to deliver a freely available article to your users through Borrowing (i.e., an article located through the internet and not delivered from a library or commercial provider). If your library is like ours, you probably discover through verification or preliminary searching dozens of articles that your users could have found on their own, but requested through ILL. If the requests for these articles don't automatically get sent through your automated protocols, how do you fill them? Send the user a link. Create a file and Check In from Lender. We create a PDF and save the file to the PDF folder on the ILLiad server, bypassing Odyssey, then sen a custom Notification, which changes the status of the transaction to Delivered to Web. The Lender is "Internet," which allows us to track the number of requests filled in this way. During our last fiscal year, it was 7% of of total article requests in Borrowing. For some time we've been hoping Atlas would add the "Mark Found Scan Now" feature to the processing ribbon within a transaction in order to facilitate delivery of an article from a non-library source. The current problem is that ILLiad assumes that a "Lender" with an address record is the provider, but nowadays with so much digitized material freely available, that's often not the case.

Hi Guy,
For open access articles we use Document Delivery instead of Borrowing. This does allow the Mark Found Scan Now function.
Yes, that's another option. But, an unnecessary routing, exit from Borrowing and re-opening of the request. Mark Found/Scan Now in Borrowing would be a one-step process. If you create a generic address record for "Internet, which would be the "Lender," it also offers the advantage of statistically tracking the proportion of articles you find freely available in relation to the total number of articles filled by other libraries.
Hi Guy,
As Alison, we also move the requests to Document Delivery. If you want to isolate the electronic articles for statistical purposes, I suggest adding a category in Customization Manager's "DocumentTypeOptions." This is our workflow:
I hope this helps,
Tina
To add to my original comment, we still track open access articles delivered via DD by using the Call Number field (typing in "open access" + date). You can isolate that data in the Custom Request Search function by searching "[Transactions.CallNumber] Contains open"
