Bot/Spam User Guidance

Atlas has recently received a number of tickets reporting activity from bot or spam users who create hundreds of accounts in a few minutes or seconds targeting those with registration that is not Captcha protected.

There are a few ways you can monitor for these users in your Aeon system:

  1. Run the Aeon User Analytics report and scan for users with non-standard usernames in the list of registered users
    • These usernames often include a mix of alphanumeric characters and special characters (ex: ab**//cd))fgzzz). They typically appear to be auto-generated and the First and Last names are also a series of alphanumeric characters that do not correspond to a First or Last Name (ex: abCDEFGHI).
    • The usernames will all have been created on the same date within a small timeframe and will have the Aeon clearance status No or New.
    • These users will typically be very easy to spot and may even use the same First and Last Name values.
    • These accounts are will also have the AuthType “Aeon” and would use the default/Visitor/Guest researcher login rather than single sign on.
  2. Perform a custom Users search in your Aeon staff client
    • Similar to the BI report, this search could look for users who’ve registered during a specific time frame and whose accounts have the clearance status No or New.

If you find any users during these searches, please open at ticket with support@atlas-sys.com so that we can remove them from your database. We will also check that no requests have been placed in these accounts (typically no requests are created).

If you are unsure or would like assistance to find these users, please also submit a support request.

Atlas’s recommendation to prevent these types of registration going forward is to enable Captcha support on your NewUserRegistration page. We support multiple Captcha types, as documented here: https://support.atlas-sys.com/hc/en-us/articles/17086336130451-Preventing-Account-Creation-Spam-in-Aeon#h_01H1SG5YG4DAV9TV9X30V6P7YD.

If you need any assistance or have any questions about the Captcha functionality, please contact support@atlas-sys.com.
