Extending access to items beyond original course dates- do you do it? If so, how?

We have a site that has instructors request extended access for users that have been granted extension for assignments. The Ares staff could override the course dates, but this lets all students have access, when only one or two may have been granted the extension. Is anyone else dealing with a similar issue? If so, do you have a workflow that you can share? If there isn't a good workflow, should we consider this as an enhancement?

  • We recently had a request from faculty chairs to extend the end date for ALL courses since there are some instances where students get extensions and need access to course readings later than the official end date. We firmly said no and that we would handle extensions on a case-by-case basis. However, we were left with the same issue you have - what do we do when a student does need an extension? This affects our LMS as well (Canvas), so I've been working with the person in charge of that system. Neither of us has a solution other than to reopen the course to everyone. I have copyright concerns and she has concerns about quizzes and assignments still being available. If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears! Otherwise, I would support an enhancement request that allows individual users extended access.

  • When I managed course reserves, we also re-opened the Ares course to all the students when one of them needed an extension. However, whenever possible we provided a 48-hour window and told them they must download the readings/documents they needed in that time frame, and then the class would close again. Once, we encountered a course that only had 3 readings, so I harvested those readings on behalf of the patron who needed the extension, but it wasn't something I could do on a regular basis. It would be a really useful enhancement to be able to open courses to an individual student for a finite period of time.
