Ares 4.7 Release Date?

Hi there,

I think we were originally told that the Ares 4.7 release date was April 24th. Now I see in the latest newsletter that it says "May." Any news on a new release date?

    Hi Jennifer,

I apologize for the ambiguity. There were some last-minute requests for additional security provisions that we felt strongly about incorporating, but these are almost done and the release should be out very soon. I don't have a specific date to give you, but the developers promised to tell us by mid-week. Thank you so much for your patience and I'll make another comment as soon as we know more. Feel free to call or email me directly, if you have any other questions or need to chat.

  • I didn't get a response to my question on the other post, so I'll try here. "Thanks for the update. I've glanced at the release notes, and I don't see the enhancement that was mentioned at the last meeting - the ability to edit tags for multiple items at once IN THE CLIENT. Am I mistaken about that? If not that's a HUGE disappointment."

  • Jennifer,

I did see this comment on Monday, but was waiting to meet with our Ares Product Team yesterday, and needed to follow up with the Concierge Coordinator, trying to track down your reference about the "last meeting." Were you referring to the JHU onsite Concierge visit? We do have this idea in UserVoice (and your comment noted), but I'm sorry to say that this option wasn't included in the Ares 4.7 release. During the Ares Team Meeting, we reviewed possible methods for inclusion and it appears that the ability to batch remove and batch add tags would be possible, but there wouldn't be a way to do a "find and replace." If something needed to be edited, the original tag would need to be removed and a new tag would need to take its place. If you have a chance, it would be great to hear the "story" behind this enhancement request and know the types of situations you encounter that would make this option helpful. Every suggestion is appreciated, but those that provide background details increase our ability to anticipate alternative uses and connect various processes in the most meaningful way.

Thank you, again, for taking the time to post in the Community and please reach out if you'd like to discuss this, or future releases, in more detail. My direct phone + extension is 757-467-7872 + 221 and my email is kkeegan@atlas-sys.com.

  • Sorry, I was referring to the Ares Virtual Conference that took place November 29 and 30, 2017.

The use case for editing multiple tags at once is pretty straightforward. We use instructors tags to identify weeks or class sessions for assigned readings. Professors often change around the order of their lectures. We would like to be able to change the tags for the assigned readings for week 1 to week 3 for example. We would need to be able to select or check off the items that we wanted to change.

It was my impression after the Virtual Conference that this ability would be added to the next release, hence my extreme disappointment.

  • Jennifer,

I went through the code and tried to find an alternative solution, but only ended up finding some inconsistencies in documenting existing functionality, which we're having fixed. It stuck out to me,right away, that instructors are allowed to batch add tags, but not batch remove them, in the web interface. If this was altered, do you still see a need to have batch tag editing inside the staff client,as well? Do you think instructors tend to ask staff members to edit tags for them, because that's what they expect, or because it isn't possible to batch remove them online?

  • No. We don't use the instructor/web side of Ares at all. Only library staff post and edit reserve readings.
