OCLC Special Messages - Overdue (Borrowing)

When you receive the OCLC Special Message Overdue in Borrowing it means the item was not updated by the Lending institution prior to the due date.  This could be for several reasons:

1.  The item has not been returned by your patron.  You should contact the patron and ask that the book be returned as soon as possible as any delay jeopardizes your relationship with the lending library.

2.  The item has been returned by the patron but has not been returned to the lending library.  You should return the item as soon as possible.

3.  The item has been returned to the lending library but was not updated in ILLiad at your library.  You should manually update the item to returned.

4.  The item has been returned to the lending library but they have not completed the request.  You should contact the lending library and ask then if they have received the item.  If they have, ask them to please complete the request.

5.  The item has been lost by your patron or somewhere in the process.  You should check your stacks and see if it has been reshelved at your library by mistake.  If not, then you should contact the lending library and ask them to check their stacks, if they have not already done so.  You can also contact any delivery service that you may be using to return items, such as FedEx.  If the item is truly lost, you will need to start a discussion with the lending library on payment.  Remember that the ILL Code for the United States stipulates that the borrower is responsible for lost items.
